Sturgeon-Weir River Maligne Lake to Denare Beach
About this Canoe Route
Sturgeon-Weir River Maligne Lake to Denare Beach
Soon after your put-in at Leaf Rapids Recreation Site on Maligne Lake on Highway 106, you will enjoy the narrow flow of the Sturgeon-Weir River as it heads southward. Portages around rapids on this stretch of the river are relatively short and provide vistas of a variety of classes of rapids. Pick one of the great campsites along the way to enjoy some fishing and listening to the rapids by the roar of a campfire.
The second half of this trip is very different than its first half. Amisk Lake is a big lake. Denare Beach is located on the northeast shore. Depending on the conditions, you might be safest going through the West, North, & East channel to stay out of the wide expanse, which does have some islands.
For the historically minded, there is a campsite at Fort Henry Frobisher House west of Denare Beach on Missi Island. Hugging the west and south shore leads to Amisk Lake Recreation site, a different takeout option.
Two experiences in one!
