Nut Portage Loop

Sheltered channels and bays characterize this great beginner trip. From Nut Point campground, explore the islands of Campbell Channel before portaging into Downton Lake via a short portage, then take a longer one to McGibbon Bay.

The northwest shore of McGibbon Bay has several spots with cliffs that are popular to explore. The height of the land on both sides of it, plus its narrowness, makes McGibbon Bay a great training ground for an aspiring wilderness paddler.

There is a morsel of the bigger water of Nut Bay before accessing Campbell Channel again via Nut Portage. From this portage, you can opt to hike for a bit on the Nut Point Hiking Trail. The rest of the trip is sheltered paddling on Campbell Channel back to the dock at Nut Point campground dock.

Camping overnight at Nut Portage or one of the islands of Campbell Channel is a great option too! Montreal River Outpost provides canoe rentals and shuttle service for this short loop trip. It is the perfect appetizer for wilderness canoe tripping!
