Clearwater River Warner Rapids to Fort McMurray

Soon after your put-in at Warner Rapids bridge on the Cluff Lake road you will be navigating challenging rapids as the Clearwater River flows southwesterly.

Gould Rapids. Smoothrock Falls. Skull Canyon. Simonson Rapids. Contact Rapids. This is a great adventure for the advanced paddler. At minimum, you have to be able to navigate up to Class II+ rapids. Camping near the noise of moving water is idyllic.

On the second part of the trip, the Clearwater River meanders through a valley surrounded by Sandstone Cliffs. The Methye Portage, a 19-km ancient trail which connects the Athabasca watershed with the Churchill watershed, is always an option to portage, than paddle across Lac La Loche to La Loche. The River continues lazily to the city of Fort McMurray. It is common to see wildlife on this stretch of the river.
