Campfire Tents

Nylon Campfire TentHorizons Unlimited has now been making the Campfire Tent since 1986. The first ones were made for Bill Mason, who made these tents popular. As a canoe outfitter we became fascinated with the idea of the Campfire Tent.

We are definitely of the same mind as Bill Mason when he said, "A tent should be something that you live in while you are enjoying the out of doors. Being comfortable no matter what the weather tries to do to you is an art. It takes some thought, some basic know-how, a little ingenuity and the right tent to start with."

Campfire TentThis tent gives you a home away from home. It incorporates a bedroom, sitting room, kitchen, and mudroom, all warmed by central heating. After a wet day on the water you have a hope of drying your clothes. If it's pouring rain and you just want to sit and enjoy the view, what's to stop you from cooking a meal or brewing up a cup of coffee in dry comfort.

For over 100 years the Campfire Tent, formerly known as the Baker Tent was made of a lightweight, high quality cotton called 'Egyption Cotton' or 'sailsilk'. This quality of cotton is no longer available. Horizons Unlimited is now manufacturing a nylon version of the Campfire Tent. After much skepticism, the nylon Campfire Tent has proven itself to be worthy of our stamp of approaval. We have been using this nylon for more than 10 years in our tarps. They have stood up very well in our rental program - a worthy test! The wedge shape of the tent along with its rear windows allows moist air to leave the tent. The nylon is lighter and more compact than the cotton was and does not add weight in a rain. It is definitely worth consideration!

The Campfire Tent has been around in various forms for many years. Horizons Unlimited undertook to develop a tent that incorporates all the best features of the Campfire Tent. We also undertook to develop a tent that met with Bill Mason's approval. Bill called our tent "almost bomb-proof". We invite you to try one of our models.

Cotton Campfire Tent

Horizons Unlimited is now also making the Campfire Tent out of 6.5 oz. cotton. The material is obviously heavier than the nylon. It does however, make a very nice traditional campfire tent. It's a tent Bill Mason would have been proud of. Prices for the poles are shown separately.

Nylon Campfire Tent

We are now offering a Nylon Version of our Campfire Tent. Making this tent out of nylon is fairly new to us. The early feedback is quite good. Pictured above is the 7x7 Nylon Campfire Tent.

The Environmental Fireplace

The Environmental FireplaceThe Environmental Fireplace is another Bill Mason original. He gave the idea to Ric Driediger at Horizons Unlimited and the idea became reality. In the past few years the original firebox has been again redesigned to make it even better.

This folding fireplace is ideal for the environmentally conscious canoeist. When the fireplace is placed on some rocks it will not leave a scar, even if your fire is situated in thick moss. When boiling a pot of water, the fireplace requires half the wood of an open fire. Because the heat is so much more contained, even damp or poor firewood will burn. For these reasons we call it the Environmental Fireplace.

The Environmental FireplaceThe Environmental Fireplace is light weight. It folds down and fits into a heavy envelope for easy transport.

The Environmental Fireplace is made with a false bottom, which helps to keep it from warping and keeps the bottom from burning through. The false bottom also helps in insulate the ground from fire.

Canoeing Tarps

Horizons Unlimited TarpHorizons Unlimited manufactures several different styles of tarps for the serious wilderness camper. These tarps are made from a tough waterproof nylon. All tarps can be purchased in either lightweight Ripstop Nylon or the tougher Flag Nylon. Flag Nylon is a tough 200 denier nylon that is treated to withstand UV rays, is water repellent and flame resistant. It comes in a variety of colours: orange, yellow, light green, red, dark green, royal blue, purple and black. Below are the tarp styles available. All tarps can be purchased in either the lightweight Ripstop Nylon or the tougher Flag Nylon. The prices are the same for either. The Ripstop is about half the weight.

Large Tarp

This tarp is 15x15 feet. It has two centre loops for tying up to trees and two reinforced centre patches for pole supports. The Large Tarp can be set up in a variety of ways depending on the weather and your imagination. Price: $335

Small Tarp

The Small Tarp is the same as the Large Tarp above but it is 10X10 feet and has only one centre loop and one reinforced centre patch. Price: $189

Self Supporting Shelter

Horizons Unlimited Self Supporting ShelterThis tarp is, as its name suggests - free standing. The top quality Eastman Aluminum poles are placed in such a way that the tarp shelter requires no guy lines or tent pegs to hold it up. Tabs are strategically placed around the outside of the tarp to tie down in a wind.

One of the great benefits of the Self Supporting Shelter is that it can be set up in minutes. You are sitting beside you campfire when a sudden rain comes up, in a few minutes your Self Supporting Shelter is erected and you are again sitting beside your campfire, warm and dry.

A feature not shown in the picture is the no-see-um netting door. This door is attached to the Self Supporting Shelter with Velcro. The door can be easily removed when it is not required; then quickly reattached when those pesky critters attack. The door has a center zipper.

The Self Supporting Shelter comes in your choice of 2 different materials. The one pictured is made with the tougher Flag Nylon. The other is the lighter weight, more compact and but not quite as strong, Ripstop nylon. The Flag Nylon comes in white as pictured, the Ripstop in a very light gray.

The best feature of the Self Supporting Shelter is that it is constructed by Horizons Unlimited with our high standards in mind. I know you will be pleased with the quality of our product.
