Expedition Equipment Information

What you should bring:

Clothing:

We strongly recommend you choose synthetics or wool over cotton for clothes to be worn in cool or damp conditions, but feel free to bring hot weather cottons for sunny days on the water.

  • 2 changes of clothing, including items for a broad range of temperatures (long sleeves to shorts)
  • Sweater or fleece for cool days and nights.
  • Light jacket that can be worn as a wind breaker.
  • Hat with a good sun shield and a pair of sunglasses.
  • several pairs of wool or polypro socks and a pair or two of light socks.
  • 2 pairs of footwear - one for wet action (in canoe), and one for dry action (in camp). Both should be light and quick-drying (nylon or neoprene; avoid leather). eg. nylon mesh runners, canvas sneakers, wet suit booties, sailboarding boots, water sandals, aquasocks.
  • Light gloves for cool, windy weather (for fall trips include wool gloves)
  • Bathing suit.

Sleeping bag:

  • 1.5 to 2 pound down or fibre filled sleeping bag (medium weight for moderate temperatures)
  • Sleeping pad - Thinsulite, Thermarest, etc. for warmth and comfort. We have Thermarests available for rent.

Rain gear:

Essential for your comfort and peace of mind, good rain gear means a rain jacket with a hood and rain pants. These may be inexpensive rubberised nylon or breathable materials like Gortex. Ponchos are not advised, as they are cumbersome to paddle in and hard to handle in windy conditions.

Personal necessities:

Bring your own toiletries, insect repellent, sunscreen, etc.

Optional:

  • Camera, well waterproofed.
  • Fishing tackle and a fishing license. These may be purchased in Missinipe at the Horizons base.
  • Pocket knife.
  • A wet suit or dry suit is great for cool weather whitewater.
  • Bug shirt/hat.
