Clinic General Information

paddlerapids.jpg (50K)

The common thread of all Horizons Unlimited canoe courses is fun and hard work. You will come away with new skills and knowledge and a wonderful experience full of fun and memories. All our clinics are taught by certified canoe instructors. We supply all group gear, food, cooking and eating utensils and rescue equipment. You supply your own canoe, paddle, lifejacket, sleeping bag, tent, pack and personal gear. This equipment is available for rent from Horizons Unlimited if requested. There is a 20% rental discount for course participants.

Whether you've never been in a canoe before or you're ready to learn to go canoe camping, we can help you improve your flatwater, whitewater, or canoe camping skills. We also offer certification in canoe trip leadership and whitewater rescue, as well as flatwater and whitewater instructor programs. So come take a course; learn how to paddle; learn how to go on a canoe trip; you will start on a lifelong adventure.

All of our courses are Paddle Canada approved. Those participants showing the required competence will receive certification from Paddle Canada. The certification fee is included in the price of the course.

Clinic Equipment Information

You Supply the Following:

  1. Clothing
    • 2 changes of clothes. This should include 2 light T-shirts.
    • a sweater for cool days and nights. A light jacket that can be worn as a wind breaker.
    • a hat with a good sun shield and a pair of sunglasses.
    • several pairs of wool socks and a pair or two of light socks.
    • 2 pairs of sneakers - one for wearing while canoeing (they'll get wet) and one for keeping dry to wear in camp. Another option is a pair of wet suit booties.
    • a pair of light gloves for cool, windy weather (optional).
    • a bathing suit and a pair of shorts for hot weather.
    • kneepads for kneeling in the canoe are a good idea.
  2. Sleeping bag. I recommend 1.5 pounds of down or equivalent. An insulite pad or something similar for underneath is good for warmth and comfort. Thermarests and sleeping bags can be rented from Churchill River Canoe Outfitters.
  3. Rain gear. A good quality but lightweight raincoat of some sort is very important.
  4. Personal necessities: face cloth, toothbrush and paste, comb, insect repellent, etc.
  5. Canoe, paddle and lifejacket. These may be rented from CRCO for a special school rate. Let us know well in advance so we can reserve it for you.
  6. Tent. Make sure it has a good rain fly. This too may be rented from CRCO.
  7. Optional:
    • Camera. Well waterproofed.
    • Fishing tackle and a fishing license.
    • Pocket knife.
  8. Pack. This is to put all this gear into. CRCO rents these as well.
  9. A safety helmet for rapids. Hockey helmets work okay. CRCO has these for rent.
  10. Wet suits make a white water course a lot more fun. It would be a good idea to bring one. CRCO has these for rent.
