| Swift Water Rescue Course 1 |
Description
This course is done in conjunction with Raven Rescue.
The Swift Water Rescue Course is the standard in swift water rescue training. Successful candidates receive Rescue 3 International Technician level certification which is the legal standard of care for professionals working on or near moving water in Canada. The Swiftwater Rescue Technician course is fully NFPA 1670 and 1006 compliant. This certification is the required standard for professional guides, white water paddling instructors, parks personal, conservation officers and rescue departments. The emphasis of this program is identifying hazards, self rescue, use of technical equipment and safely rescuing a distressed swimmer. This program is offered as an intensive three day, 24 to 30 hour class. It has one day of classroom instruction followed by two dys of developing and practicing water rescue skills.

| Introduction/Intermediate White Water Solo |
Description
This course teaches the skills that competent flat-water solo paddlers and paddlers who are used to paddling rapids tandem, need in order to manoeuver safely in easy to intermediate level rapids solo. During the course you'll learn eddy turns, S turns and front ferries, as well as back ferries and surfing. Participants will practice canoe-over-canoe and throw bag rescues. At the end of this course, you'll be able to recognize and avoid hazards in Class I and II water. You'll be opening up a whole realm of new solo tripping possibilities. You'll also be stepping into the new world of playboating.
We spend the weekend camping out, usually on Barker Island just upstream from our base in Missinipe. It is a 2 hour paddle and one short portage to our Barker Island base camp. Churchill River Canoe Outfitters supplies all the food and eating utensils and emergency equipment. Our qualified instructors are competent and fun loving.
Pre-requisite Skills
Since this is only a very short school it is important to come with the required skills in order to allow the school to run smoothly. These are the prerequisites:
You are a good swimmer and are not afraid of water; you can paddle a strait line from the solo position of the canoe
without switching sides; you have your Intermediate Lake Certification, or proof of equivalent certification.
If you do not have the Pre-requisite skill, please consider taking the Pre Course offered on July 15. Cost is $100. |
Testing Terms
Safety Knowledge: canoe rescues, throw bag rescues - including throw bag self-rescues,
swimming a rapid.
Demonstrate: (in class I to II rapids solo): entering and exiting a canoe, landing in moving water,
surfing, off side paddling, S-turns, back ferrying, front ferrying, eddy turns, paddling a pre planned
course down a rapid, side slipping, portaging, lining, tracking and wading
Other: canoe and environmental ethics, river running theory, reading white water, knowledge of
river classification, outfitting a canoe, canoe design and construction
Other Information
You will bring your own equipment (tent and sleeping bag and other personal gear). Churchill River Canoe Outfitters will supply all group gear, food, canoe and rescue equipment.

Testing Terms
- Safety Knowledge: canoe over canoe rescue, rescue breathing, throw bag rescues, self- rescue, retreiving
a swamped canoe.
- Strokes: river J, both high and low braces, bow draw and cross bow draw.
- Demonstrate: (in class I and easy class II rapids): front ferrying, eddy turns, S turns, back ferrying, entering & exiting a canoe, landing in a current, side slip, front surf, portaging, lining, tracking & wading.
- Theory: canoe and environmental ethics, river running theory, reading white water, knowledge of

Description
This course teaches the skills that competent solo white water paddlers need in order to reach that next level of canoeing skill. During the course you'll take the maneuvers you learned to do and apply them to much more difficult rapids. You will hone your skills to precision. Surfing in huge waves solo will become common place. At the end of this course, you'll be comfortable playing solo in Class 3 water. You'll be opening up a whole realm whitewater playing possibilities.

Description
These three days are set up to help you know better how to plan, organize and go on your own canoe trip. Our plan is to set up a base camp on French Lake and do our instruction there. We
will work on skills and techniques. Canoe trip scenarios will get you involved in the learning
process. It will be great fun and educational.
Pre-requisite Skills
Since this is only a short school it is important to came with the required skills in order to allow the school to run smoothly. These are the prerequisites:
You are a good swimmer and are not afraid of water; you have your Paddle Canada Lake Canoe Intermediate Skills or equivalent and you are in fairly good physical condition.

Canoe Tripping |
Description
Canoe Tripping Level 2 is designed to take you to the next level of Canoe Trip Guiding. It is designed for those who have been on a lot of canoe trips. They have the skills needed to be a canoe trip guide. What they are lacking is many of those technical and legal details that could make them a real guide. This course is designed to give these potential guides the skills and information they require. This is done in the context of a short canoe trip.
Pre-requisite Skills
Since this is only a short school it is important to come with the required skills in order to allow the school to run smoothly. These are the prerequisites:
You have the following Paddle Canada Certifications or equivalent skill or experience: Introduction to Canoe Tripping, Intermediate Lake Paddling and Introduction to White Water. You cannot pass the course without these skills; you are a good swimmer and are not afraid of water; you have been on several canoe trips totalling at least 25 days of canoe tripping experience. |
Testing Terms
- Skills: route selection and trip preparation, menu planning, evaluating the skill of participants, knots
and ropes, paddling skills, navigation skills, portaging, lining, tracking and wading, white water skills:
(eddy turns, front ferrying, S turns and judgement skills).
- Safety: canoe over canoe rescue, self rescue, throw bags, communication.
- Theory: canoe history, canoe design and construction, canoe repair and maintenance, weather interpretation,

| White Water for Tripping |
Description
How you would run a set of rapids with a loaded canoe 100 kilometers away from help is
quite different from how you run a set of rapids with an empty canoe close to help. Our other
white water courses tend to focus on the latter. This course is designed with the former situation
in mind. You will spend time in Class II and II+ rapids with loaded canoes. You will be
taught: front and back ferrying. We will work on backing into eddies. We will spend time
lining up and down rapids and the different techniques involved for each. This clinic is designed
to teach you the skills needed to handle a challenging white water canoe trip.
Pre-requisite Skills
Since this is only a short school it is important to come with the required skills in order to allow the school to run smoothly. These are the prerequisites:
You are a good swimmer and are not afraid of water; you are in fairly good physical condition; have your basic white water or equivalent (Paddle Canada’s Introduction to White Water). |

If you are involved in teaching canoeing to friends, students or clients, this is a course for you. We will test your skills and spend time working out the best ways to teach these skills your students. The course will take place at the Churchill River Canoe Outfitters base in
Missinipe. You are welcome to rent a cabin at CRCO or stay in the campground. Meals are supplied

| Advanced White Water
Instructors Certification Solo and Tandem |
Description
When you receive your Advanced Canoe White Water Instructors Certification you will be qualified
as a top level white water canoe instructor. You will have proven yourself to be an excellent
canoeist in white water both tandem and solo. You are also a top level instructor of white water
skills. You have strong judgement skills and therefore can avoid most emergencies. But when an
emergency happens you are quick to know how to deal with it. Your first aid and rescue skills
are strong. You've proven yourself to be an excellent outdoor chef. We are assuming that you
already have these skills. This course is designed to help you with being able to articulate and
communicate these skills to others.
Pre-requisite Skills
Since this is only a short school it is very important to come with the required skills in order to allow the school to run smoothly. These are the prerequisites:
You have the following Paddle Canada Certifications or equivalent skill or experience: Advanced Lake Paddling, Advanced White Water, you are a good swimmer and are not afraid of water; you have years of white water canoeing experience. |
Testing Terms
- Skills: rescues, eddy turn, peel out, s turn, front ferry, back ferry, jet ferry, side slip, front serf,
side surf, canoe design, canoe repair and canoe outfitting. These skills need to be preformed in
Class III rapids.
Any client showing their ability to teach, communicate and demonstrate the above skills will receive
the Instructors Certification.

Camping are a few of the types of courses
we offer. Many of our courses are certified by Paddle Canada. Churchill River Canoe Outfitters can also offer programs in Kayak Touring and Whitewater Kayaking.
Many of the courses we teach are private courses.
Often groups heading out on a canoe trip want
some instruction before they head out. Sometimes
groups will come specifically for a canoe course.
Our instructors are well known in canoeing circles
